Asphalt Shingle Roofs

With much improved materials, asphalt shingle roofs remain the most common home roof. Asphalt shingles are reinforced with organic material, wood fibers or fiberglass.

There’s also a laminated version that comes in a greater variety of colors and textures. Known as “architectural” or “dimensional” shingles, laminates are fairly thick, so when installed, their depth creates a three-dimensional surface that gives a look of more expensive shake or slate tiles.

Asphalt shingles are lightweight, fire resistant, relatively easy to install and can sometimes be placed over existing roofs.

Wood Shingle Roofs

Wood Shake Shingles are made of treated pine, spruce or more commonly, cedar. Wood shingles are usually cut by machine, giving them a smooth finish, which in turn, makes them easier to install than hand cut shakes.

Most shakes don’t have as long a life as asphalt shingles, typically 15-20 years - a cedar roof, however, can last up to 30 years.

Initially shakes appear brown or red in color, but expect the weather to fade the real wood and leave it a soft gray.

Wood shingle roofs can be steep and slippery, so hiring a professional to install or replace wood shingles is a wise decision.

Slate Shingle Roofs

Slate Shingles, also referred to as stone shingles, are beautiful and last for generations — 45 to 70 years — with some claims of over 100 years if installed properly. They’re also heavy and fragile which makes them the hardest of the shingle roofs to install.

Shingle Roof Cost

An asphalt shingle roof is the least-expensive option and, with a 20-30 year life, is an excellent value.

Installation costs of wood shingles can run as much as 50% higher than asphalt shingles. Maintenance cost is also a factor since wood requires more care.

Slate is easily breakable and will cost up to 4 times other shingle materials. Installation too, will be much more costly than asphalt shingles. The weight of slate shingles requires a beefier roof structure which can add to the overall cost.

Asphalt shingle roofs can cost anywhere from $50 to $150 or more per square (a “square” is 100 square feet, or a ten-foot by ten-foot area). Tearing off the existing shingles, which is highly recommended, will add another $30 to $50 per square. Metal roofing and concrete tiles may start at $100 per square, or run up to $600 a square and more for coated steels and copper. Ceramic tile and slate are always high-priced. Clay tiles can cost $300 to $500 installed per square. Slate, with its need for skilled and experienced craftsmen, could cost up to $1000 a square.

Shingle Roof Care

  • Asphalt shingles don’t require much maintenance and can be recycled. They should be inspected regularly, however, as severe weather can cause damage or even blow shingles off a roof.
  • Wood shingles require regular maintenance such as washing to remove any mildew or moss and re-oiling with a clear wood finishing product.
  • Slate sheds ice and snow very well, but is subject to damage from flying objects or debris. Repairs are difficult and best left to experts.
